Welcome to Great Lumley

Great Lumley is an English civil parish within the unitary authority of Durham

Great Lumley a former mining village is situated in County Durham, The village originates from Anglo Saxon times and the name means ‘lambs field’. The earliest mining reference was in the 1300’s by the Monks of Finchale, this continued for over 700 years with 26 known coal pits, until the closure of Sixth Pit in 1966. As well as mining there has been a history of agriculture, brick making, steel and iron foundry industry; in modern times the village has expanded dramatically whilst still retaining its close knit community spirit. It enjoys a beautiful rural location but is right on the doorstep of the main commercial and employment centres of Newcastle Sunderland and Durham. Truly the best of both worlds
